The C Major Scale

What is a Major Scale?

A scale is a collection of musical notes ordered by pitch, acting like a staircase of sound. The major scale is the most fundamental scale in Western music, known for its bright, happy, and familiar sound. It is built using a specific sequence of distances between notes called whole steps and half steps.

The Musical DNA: W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Every major scale follows a strict formula of steps: Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half. A half step is the very next closest key on the piano, while a whole step skips one key. When you apply this specific pattern starting on the note C, it naturally uses only the white keys on your keyboard.

Building the C Major Scale

To build this scale, we start on C and climb upward. Moving a whole step takes us to D, another whole step to E, and a half step lands on F. Continuing with three more whole steps takes us through G, A, and B, before a final half step brings us home to a higher C.
