Lesson 15 · Learn
Major Triads
What is a major triad?
A major triad is a three-note chord that sounds bright and happy. It is built by stacking two specific intervals above a root note: first a major 3rd, then a perfect 5th. When played together, these three notes create a complete, stable chord.
Why learn triads?
Triads are the foundation of most Western music, from pop songs to classical pieces. Once you know how to build them, you can harmonize melodies and understand chord progressions. Practicing triads also helps you recognize chord shapes quickly on the keyboard.
How to build a major triad
Pick any key as your root. Count up 4 half-steps (a major 3rd) to find the middle note, then count up 7 half-steps from the root (a perfect 5th) to find the top note. For example, C major is C – E – G: C to E is 4 half-steps, C to G is 7 half-steps.
