Melodic Intervals
What is a Melodic Interval?
An interval is simply the distance in pitch between two musical notes. When you play these notes one after the other to create a tune, it is called a melodic interval. Seconds and thirds are the most common stepping stones used to build memorable melodies.
Why Seconds and Thirds Matter
Moving by a 'second' means stepping to the very next letter name, which creates a smooth, flowing sound. Moving by a 'third' means skipping a letter name, which adds a joyful or dramatic leap to your music. Recognizing these distances helps your fingers intuitively know how far to reach on the keyboard.
How to Measure Major and Minor Steps
A major second is a whole-step skip over a black key (like C to D), while a minor second is a half-step to the very next physical key (like E to F). Similarly, a major third spans four piano keys and sounds bright (C to E), while a minor third spans three piano keys and sounds slightly sadder or sweeter (E to G).
